How does the ambient temperature affect the use of terrazzo prefabricated panels

During the construction of terrazzo prefabricated panels, the surrounding environmental temperature has a significant impact, mainly reflected in four aspects: cracking risk, construction efficiency, material properties, and maintenance effect. The specific impacts and countermeasures are as follows:
1, The impact of low temperature environment (such as winter construction)
Increased risk of cracking
The solidification rate of cement-based materials slows down at low temperatures. If insulation measures are not taken, slow water evaporation may lead to internal stress concentration and cause shrinkage cracks. Especially when the ambient temperature is below 5 ℃, the cement hydration reaction almost stops. If construction is forced at this time, the ground is prone to hollowing and cracking due to frost heave or uneven drying.
Reduced construction efficiency
Low temperature can prolong the solidification time of materials, for example, the mortar bonding layer may take several days to reach the design strength, resulting in a delay in the construction period. At the same time, the difficulty of workers' operations increases, and processes such as grouting and grinding require more precise temperature control, otherwise it may affect the surface smoothness.
Material performance degradation
If prefabricated panels or mortar are stored at low temperatures, internal structure damage may occur due to freeze-thaw cycles, manifested as color changes and decreased strength. For example, when the storage temperature is below 0 ℃, plastic flooring needs to be placed at room temperature 24 hours in advance to recover, otherwise it is prone to deformation.
Countermeasures:
Seal the construction area and use heating equipment to maintain an ambient temperature of ≥ 5 ℃.
Cover the base concrete and mortar bonding layer with insulation materials (such as cotton quilts and plastic films) before it dries, and maintain a positive temperature.
Choose frost resistant cement or add early strength agent, but strictly control the dosage to avoid an increase in shrinkage value.
2, The impact of high temperature environment (such as summer construction)
Water evaporates too quickly
High temperature causes rapid evaporation of moisture on the surface of mortar. If not replenished or cured in time, it is easy to form sand holes and pores, reducing the surface density. For example, after grinding, the slurry needs to be immediately washed and coated with cement slurry of the same color, otherwise the slurry will quickly solidify at high temperatures and it will be difficult to fill the defects.
Thermal expansion and contraction issues
Terrazzo has a high coefficient of expansion and may crack due to thermal expansion and contraction in environments with large temperature differences (such as day night temperature difference>15 ℃). Especially after the popularization of underfloor heating, uneven heating of the ground will exacerbate this problem.
Material stability decreases
High temperature may accelerate the precipitation of alkaline substances in cement, leading to alkali bleeding and affecting its appearance. Meanwhile, if the storage temperature is too high (such as>32 ℃), the prefabricated board may deform due to thermal stress.
Countermeasures:
During construction, the ambient temperature shall be 20-25 ℃ and the humidity shall be 50% -70%. The site temperature can be reduced by spray or shading.
Large areas of the ground need to be equipped with grid joints, aligned with the shrinkage joints of the concrete cushion layer, to release thermal stress.
Add polypropylene fibers or lay mesh cloth to enhance crack resistance, or use low expansion coefficient materials such as epoxy grinding stones as substitutes.

3, The impact of temperature and humidity fluctuations
Uneven humidity leads to color difference
If there is a large difference in humidity in the construction area (such as near doors, windows, or ventilation openings), the hydration rate of cement may vary, which may lead to surface color differences. For example, when returning to Nantian, terrazzo floors that have not been properly waterproofed may absorb moisture and regain moisture, affecting the appearance.
Key maintenance conditions
After grinding, it is necessary to apply cement slurry multiple times and cure for 3-4 days. If the curing environment temperature fluctuates greatly, it may lead to uneven surface strength. For example, after the third round of grinding, it is necessary to rinse with clean water and cure until the surface is smooth and free of sand holes. If the temperature is too low, it will prolong the curing time.
Countermeasures:
Ensure proper waterproofing treatment of the foundation before construction to avoid the impact of humid environments.
Use dehumidifiers or ventilation equipment to control humidity and maintain a stable maintenance environment.
Regularly maintain the ground, keep the surface smooth, and reduce the risk of moisture infiltration.

4, Suggestions for responding to special scenarios
Floor heating environment: Priority should be given to using epoxy grinding stones or low expansion coefficient materials, and an elastic buffer layer should be installed between the ground and the floor heating pipes to reduce thermal stress transmission.
Wet areas (such as bathrooms): Before construction, lay waterproof rolls (such as SBS rolls) and add anti slip treatment to the surface layer to prevent the risk of slipping.
Small or complex spaces: Avoid cast-in-place terrazzo, use prefabricated panels to reduce joint problems, and cover joint marks through color matching or pattern design.
